2023 was a special year for the festival, which takes place every September, thanks to The Boy and the Heron by Japanese director Hayao Miyazaki opening the spectacle – the first time an animated film has done so. The festival’s top prize is the People’s Choice Award, which went to American Fiction.
As Asia’s largest film festival, the Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) in South Korea is a cornerstone for Asian cinema at a time when the region’s cinematic chops are quickly becoming recognised on the international stage.
BIFF is known for its youthful energy and commitment to showcasing new filmmakers, groundbreaking cinema, and stellar performances from unknown actors. Focusing on Asian films and filmmakers, the BIFF offers blockbuster premieres, indie films, and arthouse works all under one roof.
