Fixer, line producer or production service company: which do you need?
The three roles overlap and the words are used loosely, so this is how they differ in practice on an international shoot. A local fixer solves problems on the ground: locations, filming permits, local crews, transport, translation and the administrative work that comes with filming in a foreign country. A line producer owns the budget and the schedule for the whole production and usually travels with it. A production service company contracts the local crew, equipment rental and permits in its own name, carries the insurance and invoices you once.

How do you hire a film fixer abroad?
Five steps, and the first two cost nothing.
- Send the brief. Country, dates, format, crew size and what you are bringing versus hiring locally.
- Get a crew list and a quote. Named local crew with day rates, equipment rental options and the permits your shoot needs, usually within a few days.
- Recce. Location scouting with photographs, access notes and travel times per location, so the director locks locations before the crew flies.
- Contract and pre production. One agreement covering crew, kit, transport, accommodation and filming permits; we file the paperwork under our own name where the authority requires a local entity.

How much does a film fixer cost?
Fixers charge a day rate, and the total depends on four things: how many crew days you need, whether the fixer is also supplying local crews and equipment rental, how much administrative work the permits involve, and how far the unit travels inside the country. A documentary day with a fixer, a camera operator and a sound recordist sits at one end; a commercial with a full local crew, transport and location fees sits at the other.
