Make Your Production Come to Life in Majestic Egypt

Egypt is an ancient, mystical country with lots of iconic landmarks, from pyramids to Great Sphinx of Giza. The sprawling capital of Cairo is the biggest city in the Arab world and has a mixture of traditional and modern architecture, which make for a colourful backdrop. While along the Red Sea, you’ll find both sandy beaches and areas of rocky, unspoilt coastline.

Some of Our Filming Work in Egypt

Filming in Egypt

The ease of filming in Egypt will usually depend on the type of production and the permits needed. For straightforward shoots, you can sometimes get a permit within three to four days, but if you plan to shoot underwater or close to historic landmarks, then it can take up to two weeks. NEEDaFIXER EGYPT can chase up permits for you and ensure everyone in the crew has the visas and work permits needed before filming begins. Some productions in Egypt will require a government minder to attend, although they can be useful when dealing with local security personnel.

One challenge of filming in Egypt can be getting the right equipment and crew, but this is where NEEDaFIXER EGYPT can help. We can arrange for equipment to be brought in from Europe if needed and can hire a local crew to ensure you can begin filming from day one. You might need a director, producers, camera crew, sound technicians or runners, and we have a vast network of contacts in the area who could work on your production. If you plan to cast local talent, then we can even provide showreels, so you can make decisions before you even touch down in Egypt.

Another challenge can be dealing with the weather, particularly if you are out in the desert. Filming in these areas in the hot summer months of May to October can be uncomfortable, so you may need to work around the hottest parts of the day. Between November and April, you can enjoy cooler weather, and the coastal areas are always a bit more bearable than the southern deserts. If you are planning to film in remote locations, then we can help with transportation and accommodation to even the most far-flung places. It should be noted that religious dates such as Ramadan can make it difficult to film, and we would discuss various options with you to work around this.

Egypt has its own thriving domestic film industry and also welcomes a large number of foreign film crews. Classic movies such as the biblical epic The Ten Commandments have been filmed in Egypt, and film enthusiasts will no doubt remember the scene of Charlton Heston, playing Moses and parting the Red Sea. More recently, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen features scenes filmed in the desert, as did the action/horror movie The Mummy. Cairo has featured in many international TV shows, as well as domestic movies and documentaries.

Fixers in Egypt

NEEDaFIXER EGYPT offers a wide range of fixing services to make your Egypt shoot so much easier, and there are lots of advantages to filming in this beautiful country.

The consistent weather means it’s easy to plan ahead, and there are dozens of iconic landmarks that look great on film including the pyramids and temples.

The capital of Cairo has been used as a backdrop for many movies because it’s lively and colourful, and big blockbusters such as X-Men: Apocalypse, as well as smaller, independent productions, have been set here. Egypt can also be used to stand in for other countries as it’s often safer than many of its neighbours but can look similar on film.

What can our fixers in Egypt do for you?

Egypt can sometimes be a challenging place to film because of bureaucracy, but NEEDaFIXER EGYPT can deal with the local government and sort out permits and visas.

If you are looking to film in more remote locations, then you might need us to sort out transport and accommodation, as we have local knowledge and can ensure everything is set up ready for your arrival.

You may also struggle to find the right equipment, which will sometimes need to be imported from Europe or Dubai. We can ensure you have everything you need, even filming drones, so your shoot can stay on schedule. If you’d like to find out what our fixers can do for you, get in touch today via e-mail at [email protected].

Frequently Asked Questions

How easy is it to get permits?

It usually takes 3-4 days to be granted a permit, but if you’re looking to film in specialist locations such as historical landmarks and underwater, permits can take up to two weeks. If you want to film in a popular tourist area or historical site, we’ll help you to navigate securing a filming permit for ancient wonders such as the pyramids and the infamous Valley of the Kings.

Do I need a visa or work permit?

It’s totally dependent on your country of origin and it’s worth contacting your local embassy for more info surrounding the matter. If you’d like us to reach out to the authorities, we’ll be happy to assist you.

Can I hire equipment once there?

Motion Control and Technocrane are the main suppliers, but other equipment can easily be brought in from European countries or nearby Dubai. Please do keep in mind that Egypt isn’t an ATA carnet country. We can help you to source lighting equipment, cameras, and any other film equipment.

What is the climate like?

Extremely hot all year round, but incredibly warm in the summer months from May – October, which can be slightly unbearable if you’re not used to the heat. Winters are very mild and slightly cooler between the months of November to April.
