Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides
Johnny Depp’s fourth outing as Jack Sparrow shot at Castillo San Cristóbal in San Juan, the Cueva del Indio rock formations near Arecibo and the uninhabited islet of Palominito off Fajardo.
The Rum Diary
Depp returned for the Hunter S. Thompson adaptation set in 1960s San Juan — the story unfolds across Old San Juan’s colonial streets, the beaches of Vega Baja and Fajardo’s Playa Escondida.
Fast Five
The franchise’s Rio de Janeiro chapter was largely shot in Puerto Rico: the film’s favela rooftop chase was filmed in La Perla, with further sequences in Naranjito and along San Juan’s Milla de Oro.
Captain America: Civil War
Marvel opened the film in “Lagos” — in reality San Juan’s financial district, digitally blended with Atlanta plates for the action that sets the story in motion.
Fantasy Island
Fox’s Fantasy Island TV series (2021–2023) was based entirely on Puerto Rico, shooting at the Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve in Río Grande, Old San Juan and the Las Cabezas de San Juan reserve near Fajardo.
Puerto Rico Film Commission and Tax Incentives
Part of the Department of Economic Development and Commerce (DDEC), the Film Commission administers the Puerto Rico film incentive programme under Act 60-2019, the Puerto Rico Incentives Code. Headline terms for film projects as of 2026:
- A 40% transferable tax credit on eligible payments to Puerto Rico residents and companies — talent, crew, services and goods.
- A 20% credit on qualified payments to non-resident above-the-line and below-the-line talent.
- Annual programme funding of roughly $38 million, with a minimum local spend of $50,000 ($25,000 for documentary and short-form projects).
- From fiscal year 2026–2027, applications are assessed under a stricter readiness framework — financing, chain of title, distribution and the ability to start principal photography within 120 days of the decree.

Weather is the main scheduling factor.
