Filming Across Sri Lanka: We’ve Got You Covered

COLOMBO

The country’s production hub combines modern skylines, colonial streets and ocean vistas in one city. Our film fixers in Colombo coordinate ports, markets, financial districts and seaside promenades, plus Bandaranaike International Airport access for fast company moves.

KANDY

Set in the central highlands, Kandy offers rainforests, lakeside vistas and timeless streets. It is ideal for character pieces, period drama and temple exteriors. We manage permissions for culturally sensitive locations and plan weather-smart schedules.

ANURADHAPURA

An ancient royal capital and UNESCO World Heritage Site filled with monasteries, stupas and sacred bodhi trees. With careful planning and the correct approvals, Anuradhapura delivers scale and history for documentaries and prestige features.

GALLE

Within the 16th-century Galle Fort you will find cobbled lanes, ramparts and sea-sprayed walls that play beautifully for fashion, commercials and elevated drama. We balance heritage protocols with efficient access for small to mid-size units.

SIGIRIYA AND THE CULTURAL TRIANGLE

Sigiriya Rock Fortress provides sweeping aerials and dramatic silhouettes, while nearby Dambulla Cave Temples and Polonnaruwa add carved interiors and atmospheric ruins for rich visual contrast.

HILL COUNTRY: NUWARA ELIYA AND ELLA

Tea estates, misty ridgelines and rail bridges such as the Nine Arches in Ella deliver iconic South Asian imagery. We choreograph drone windows and golden-hour coverage around cloud build-up to protect your look.

COASTS AND WILDLIFE

From Mirissa and Tangalle on the south coast to national parks such as Yala, you can stage beach sequences, coastal roads and wildlife-adjacent scenes with the right guidance and safety planning.

Productions Filmed in Sri Lanka

The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957)

David Lean’s seven-Oscar epic was filmed not in Thailand but in Sri Lanka — the bridge was built over the Kelani River at Kitulgala, with hospital scenes at Colombo’s Mount Lavinia Hotel.

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984)

Denied permits in India, Spielberg relocated to Kandy: the Hantana tea hills became the village of Mayapore and the rope-bridge gorge spanned the Mahaweli River below the Victoria Dam.

Elephant Walk (1954)

Elizabeth Taylor’s plantation drama was shot across Ceylon — Colombo, Polonnaruwa, Kandy and the rock fortress of Sigiriya — one of Hollywood’s earliest on-location ventures to the island.

Water (2005)

Forced out of India, Deepa Mehta’s Oscar-nominated drama resumed in Sri Lanka, filming at Galle Fort, Colombo Fort railway station and the Ranminitenna studio backlot in Hambantota.

Practicalities: Permits, Visas, Crew and Seasonality

Film permits in Sri Lanka

Film permits are required for most productions. The National Film Corporation of Sri Lanka manages the core filming permission, and additional approvals may be needed for heritage, archaeological and wildlife locations. Our team prepares applications, scripts and schedules, coordinates any required government representative on set, and secures local clearances.

Incentives and budget: Sri Lanka currently offers no formal cash rebate or tax credit for foreign productions — the appeal is value rather than subsidy, with some of the most competitive shoot-day costs anywhere, English-speaking crews, ATA Carnet for temporary equipment import and remarkable landscape variety from beaches to tea hills to ancient cities. Permits are issued by the National Film Corporation of Sri Lanka, typically within a few days.

Visas and work permissions

Many nationalities can obtain short-stay entry electronically, while professional filming and journalism may require a specific media or work visa. We advise on the correct route for producers, directors, cinematographers and technical crew, and manage the paperwork with timelines to protect your schedule.

Crews, casting and kit

There is a capable local crew base for small to mid-size units. For large international productions we can blend local hires with HODs you bring, and arrange equipment locally or via regional hubs when required. We also handle language support across Sinhala, Tamil and English and provide translation on set.

When to film

Sri Lanka’s climate varies by region. Many productions target December to April for the south and west, while the east often plays best in the middle of the year. We build weather-aware schedules by location to maximise shootable daylight and protect key scenes.

Popular Filming Locations

Highlights we regularly support include:

  • Colombo cityscapes and seaside promenades
  • Anuradhapura’s ancient ruins and sacred sites
  • Kandy’s lakeside district and rainforest edges
  • Galle Fort’s ramparts, courtyards and alleys
  • Sigiriya Rock Fortress and the Cultural Triangle
  • Dambulla Cave Temples and Polonnaruwa
  • Nuwara Eliya tea estates and colonial-era vistas
  • Ella’s Nine Arches Bridge and highland lookouts
  • South coast beaches around Mirissa and Tangalle
