Georgia, New Mexico and Louisiana: The New Engines of US Filmmaking

Georgia and Atlanta

Over the past decade, Georgia has quietly become one of the busiest film production states in America, rivalling California for sheer volume of feature films and television series. Atlanta and its surrounding studios now host major franchises, streaming series and independent films year-round, supported by a workforce of local film crews and production facilities that has grown enormously in recent years. For many filmmakers, Georgia is now the default choice for a US shoot.

The reason is one of the most generous incentives in the country. Georgia offers a 20% base transferable tax credit, plus an additional 10% uplift for productions that include the Georgia Entertainment Promotion logo, taking the total to 30%. Crucially, because this is a tax credit rather than a rebate, there is no annual cap on the total credits the state will issue and no sunset clause on the program. That combination of a high rate and no cap is exactly why so many large studios and production companies have built standing operations around Atlanta.

New Mexico and Santa Fe

New Mexico has built a thriving film industry on the back of its dramatic desert landscapes and a smart, layered incentive. Santa Fe and Albuquerque anchor a production scene that has drawn directors looking for the look of the American Southwest, and the state has invested heavily in studios and crew to support it. In recent years New Mexico has set records for film spending, much of it in rural areas outside the main hubs.

The New Mexico Film Production Tax Credit starts at a 25% base, with stackable uplifts that can take the total to a maximum of 40%. A 10% rural uplift applies to qualifying spend at least 60 miles from Santa Fe and Albuquerque, with a further 5% available for television series and use of an eligible production facility.
